Look at national health care

Letter to the editor

There was an article in Friday's Empire about how burdened hospitals are becoming because of customers who cannot pay. Wow, that would be solved with national health care.

The article further talked about how health care is the leading cause of bankruptcy. Wow, that would be solved with national health care. Alaska and other states are plagued with Workers Compensation problems. Wow, that would be solved with national health care.

American companies are disadvantaged because they have to pay for health care and companies in most other nations do not. Some doctors refuse Medicaid patients. Unions are striking over health care issues, and most importantly millions and millions of our most vulnerable fellow citizens have no health care insurance coverage. Wow, that would be solved with national health care.

Yes, there would be problems converting to such a system. Yes, there are also disadvantages. Yes, it would create a federal bureaucracy, but we are willing to do that when the need is great enough - witness the Department of Homeland Security.

The health care problem in the United States is out of control. The problem is threatening our very way of life. It is time we weighed the advantages versus the disadvantages apart from partisan political rhetoric.
