Southeast Road Runners Club - 12th annual Frank Maier Memorial Marathon and Douglas Island Half-Marathon: The 26.2-mile marathon begins at 7 a.m. (a 6 a.m. start is available for slower runners), and the 13.1-mile half-marathon begins at 9 a.m., both from Savikko Park in Douglas. The races are out-and-back along the Douglas and North Douglas highways, with aid stations every 2.25 miles. There will be a pre-race pasta dinner at Mike's Place in Douglas from 5 to 8 p.m. on Friday night (cost $10, $5 kids 10-under); a BBQ picnic at the race finish; and a no-host pizza social at 6 p.m. Saturday at the downtown Bullwinkle's pizza parlor. Juneau Disc Golf Association - "Second of the First" Open Tournament - Registration begins at 9 a.m., tee-off is at 10 a.m. at the Dimond Park Disc Golf Course. This is a flying disc (Frisbee) golf tournament where pro division players can win cash and amateurs can win prizes. There are seven divisions - pros, men's advanced amatuers; men's intermediate amateurs, men's amateur's, women's advanced amatuers, women's amateurs and junior amatuers (15 years old or younger). Pros and men's advanced divisions play two rounds; all other divisions play one. Entry fees are $20 for pros and $10 for all amateur divisions. Info: Juneau Disc Golf Association, 463-3353.

Juneau-Douglas High School cross-country running team - The first practice of the season is at 3:30 p.m. on Monday, July 28, in the Marie Drake Gym. All participants must have a current physical exam on file before they are allowed to practice. Summer running programs are in progress now, so prospective runners should contact the coaches as soon as possible. Glacier Swim Club Age 8-Younger team tryouts - A tryout clinic to introduce young athletes to competitive swimming takes place from 4:30-5:15 p.m. on Mondays through Thursdays, Aug. 11-21, for swimmers age 8-younger at the Augustus G. Brown Swimming Pool. There will be a time trial from 8-9:30 a.m. on Saturday, Aug. 23. The clinic cost is $25 if paid by July 31, or $30 after Aug. 1. This clinic is for young swimmers ages 6-8 who already know some swimming basics. Older Glacier Swim Club members will help team coaches so each swimmer will get lots of individual attention. Treadwell Arena summer programs - During July, the arena is available for drop-in basketball from noon to 1:30 p.m. on Mondays and from 4-7 p.m. on Wednesdays; drop-in in-line skating from noon to 1:30 p.m. on Tuesdays and Thursdays, from 4-7 p.m. on Mondays, and from 3-5 p.m. on Fridays; drop-in tennis from noon to 1:30 p.m. on Wednesdays; and drop-in in-line hockey from 4-7 p.m. on Tuesdays and Thursdays. Rental times also are available from 7:30-10 p.m. on Monday through Thursday, from 6-10 p.m. on Friday, and from noon to 10 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday.
