State has opportunity with pipeline contract

In this campaign season, there has been much discussion of a natural gas pipeline to bring gas from the North Slope to market. Each of the contenders for the governor's seat tells the voters that they will find a better way than Gov. Murkowski's current proposal.

Sound off on the important issues at

There are other issues in the governor's race, but there is no other issue about Alaska's future. There may be much by which to compare and contrast the candidates, but there should be no debate about the way forward to a gas line in our generation. Gov. Murkowski's proposal can work and should work for the benefit of all Alaskans.

All of the other candidates, both Democratic and Republican, advocate scrapping all of the present work. A change in leadership now will provide those whose capital and cooperation we need with an opportunity to delay, stall, reopen and reconsider. They will no doubt take advantage of this opportunity. They have other choices, other sources of natural gas, other ways to invest their money. We have no other opportunity on such an enormous scale to usher in a bright era for our children.

We will be supporting Gov. Murkowski.
