Fuel thief drains post office tank

FAIRBANKS - The high cost of fuel oil is motivating some people to steal.

The postmaster in Ester outside Fairbanks said someone emptied the fuel tank at the post office, making off with 500 gallons of oil worth more than $2,000.

Postmaster Bill Ackiss put up a flier reporting the theft and asking residents to help keep an eye on the post office.

Ackiss said the thief must have had an electric pump.

He said the post office had the tank topped off in April in anticipation of higher fuel oil prices this fall.

Ackiss said his boss told him the staff will just have to start wearing sweaters to work.
