JUNEAU - A 23-year-old man was arrested for drunken boating and vehicle theft Sunday night after running a boat aground at the launch in Savikko Park.

Police arrested Karl Gallow at about 11:55 p.m. Sunday and lodged him at Lemon Creek Correctional Center for stealing and operating a boat while intoxicated. The felony vehicle theft charge is punishable by up to 5 years in prison and a $50,000 fine.

The Juneau Police Department responded to a call Sunday night that a 35-foot boat "ran hard aground" at the Savikko Park boat launch by someone that appeared to be intoxicated. Gallow was initially arrested on a charge of operating a boat while intoxicated. Further investigation revealed that Gallow had taken the boat earlier Sunday without the consent of the owner.

The boat sustained only minimal injury to the hull, according to police. It was released to city harbor personnel.

Gallow is being held at the state prison without bail.
