Southeast Road Runners Club -- Frank Maier Marathon and Douglas Island Half-Marathon: Marathon runners meet at 6:30 a.m. and half-marathon runners meet at 8:30 a.m. at the Sandy Beach/Savikko Park picnic area. The marathon starts at 7 a.m. and the half-marathon starts at 9 a.m. The marathon is a certified 26.2-mile course from Douglas to False Outer Point and back, and the half-marathon is 13.1 miles from Douglas to Mile 6.5 North Douglas Highway and back. Marathon entry fee is $20 (includes t-shirt), while the half-marathon costs $13 and t-shirts are available for $10 (half-marathon only). Aid stations and a barbecue will be provided. Juneau Youth Football League -- Registration for the upcoming JYFL season takes place at the Nugget Mall from 1-4 p.m. on Sunday, July 29. Juneau-Douglas High School boys volleyball club -- Preseason practices for the JDHS boys volleyball club team will start at 6 p.m. on Tuesday, July 31, at Dzantik'i Heeni Middle School. Preseason practices will continue at 6 p.m. on Tuesdays and Thursdays starting Aug. 7 through Aug. 16, at Dzantik'i Heeni Middle School. Summer volleyball clinic -- Two clinics will be held for middle school and high school volleyball players. A clinic for players entering grades 7-9 will take place from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Wednesday, Aug. 1, at Dzantik'i Heeni Middle School. The clinic costs $40. Juneau Youth Football League -- Team tryouts: JYFL team tryouts for the pee wee, junior and senior division football teams will take place from Aug. 4-11 at Adair-Kennedy Memorial Park. Tryouts open on Saturday, Aug. 4, with senior division players going at 10 a.m., juniors at noon and pee wees at 2 p.m. More tryouts for all divisions are at 6 p.m. on Monday, Aug. 6, and at 10 a.m. on Sunday, Aug. 11. Players only need to attend one tryout, and all players trying out will be placed on a team. Players who haven't registered yet can register at the tryouts. Zach Gordon Youth Center free sports physicals -- Karl Bausler, a physician assistant with SEARHC, will provide free sports physicals for high school athletes from 1:30-4:30 p.m. on Tuesdays at Zach Gordon Youth Center. Students who will be attending grades 9-12 at Juneau-Douglas High School are encouraged to call the youth center and make an appointment now, so they beat the annual fall sports physicals rush. These physicals include medical diagnosis and treatment of minor illnesses and injuries, evaluation and treatment of skin conditions, and required immunizations for hepatitis A and B, tetanus and tuberculosis testing. Current immunizations are required for school entrance. Incoming freshmen and new students to JDHS will need a parental consent form signed, which is available at the youth center. Southeast Alaska Singles Championships tennis tournament -- Registration is open now for this tennis tournament, which takes place Friday, Aug. 24, through Sunday, Aug. 26, at the Valley location of the Juneau Racquet Club. Registration closes at 6 p.m. on Thursday, Aug. 23, and the draw will be posted at 9 a.m. on Friday, Aug. 24. Juneau Freewheelers Bicycle Club weekly women's rides -- Women's training rides are held at 6:30 p.m. every Wednesday through the summer. Meet at the Downtown location of the Juneau Racquet Club on the first and third Wednesdays of the month, and at the Valley location of the Juneau Racquet Club on the second and fourth Wednesdays. All women cyclists are welcome. Emphasis is on learning paceline riding technique, and rides last about 60-90 minutes. Helmets are required.
