JUNEAU - A man accused of breaking a woman's elbow and leaving her along the side of the road was arrested this morning at the Juneau Airport, police said.
Sam Kokotovich, 27, was charged with third-degree domestic violence assault, a felony. He is being held with no bail at the Lemon Creek Correctional Center awaiting arraignment.
Charges stem from an incident at around 5 a.m. Saturday when a woman called police to report a shouting match outside her home near Eagle Street. The woman said she heard a woman yelling, "They broke my arm," Lt. Walt Boman said.
Boman said the woman, 23, sustained a broken elbow when Kokotovich allegedly beat her with a broom handle. The other man heard shouting had left the scene when police arrived and is not a suspect in the assault, Boman said.
The woman and Kokotovich had ended their relationship the day of the incident, Boman said, and had run into each other at several local bars Friday night. Later that night, the woman went to a residence, met Kokotovich and the two began arguing, police said. Boman said Kokotovich found a broom handle and struck the woman.
Police arrested Kokotovich at the airport as he attempted to leave Juneau on business. Boman said police don't believe he was trying to avoid arrest.
