Disgusted by housing prices, 14-year resident bids goodbye to Juneau

Posted: Sunday, July 29, 2007

To the Juneau I deeply love and never thought I'd leave - after 14 years of making you home - goodbye.

Sound off on the important issues at

Our kids grew up here, and I know no other place.

We know where to look for the bears and every good fishing and hunting spot around.

We had our growing-pain trials and tribulations here, and won.

We encountered God here and learned to respect and follow Him.

We laugh and cry and sit in silent awe of the beauty that surrounds us here, virtually untouched.

But for what it costs here for a cheap two-bedroom, one-bath, single-family fixer-upper, we got 3,000 square feet with five beds, three baths and two acres. Our new executive home has a two-car garage and workshop surrounded by Amish farms in Pennsylvania for $228,000 with taxes only $1,800 per year. And it's in one of the best school districts in the state.

We never thought that we'd ever leave Juneau, and we'll return as snow birds yearly. This is home, but all I'll ever try to own here is a boat until this real estate market either learns to work with the public or crashes totally - whichever comes first.
