Posted: Tuesday, July 29, 2008

KODIAK - The Coast Guard auxiliary has begun training to eventually help conduct safety patrols in waters around Kodiak.

Bob Hough, auxiliary member and project manager for the Coast Guard Base support services, said the goal is to have the auxiliary ready to begin patrols by next April.

This past weekend, six auxiliary members demonstrated their boating skills and familiarized themselves with the Coast Guard's operational checklist.

The crew also practiced risk assessment, towing and personal flotation device use.

More training will be completed by April.
