JUNEAU - Southeast Alaska workers can win up to $500 this summer through a contest sponsored by the Juneau Empire and Capital City Weekly.

The 2009 "Secrets of Success" essay contest, held in conjunction with Labor Day, will accept submissions through Aug. 16. This year's contest also will include a separate category for business owners and those in management roles.

Participants in the essay contest are encouraged to write up to 350 words about successful business strategies they've implemented. Prizes for the winning essays are: $500 for first place, $250 for second place and $100 for third place.

The best essays will run in the "Career Survival Guide" Labor Day special section, which will appear Sept. 2 in the Capital City Weekly and Sept. 6 in the Juneau Empire.

Businesses participating in the contest also have up to 350 words to make their case. The top essay will earn the winner a catered party provided by the Juneau Empire and Capital City Weekly.

The winning business also will be profiled in the Neighbors section of the Juneau Empire and in the Capital City Weekly, as well as receive a framed copy of the article with a plaque engraving.

The essays can be dropped off at the Juneau Empire and Capital City Weekly offices or submitted by e-mail to essaycontest@juneauempire.com. Essays will be reviewed by a committee and will be judged for creativity, voice and style.
