ANCHORAGE - A 25-year-old Chignik Lake man who pleaded guilty to beating a friend to death has been sentenced to 35 years in prison.

Edwin Pedersen was convicted in April of second-degree murder for killing 22-year-old John Kalmakoff.

Chignik Lake is on the south side of the Alaska Peninsula 265 miles southwest of Kodiak.

Investigators say the two got into a drunken argument Aug. 14 over who was the better fisherman and Pedersen beat Kalmakoff with an ax.

A health aide found Kalmakoff's bloodied body on the front porch of Pedersen's home.

Pedersen had been convicted twice of misdemeanor assault. Superior Court Judge Fred Torrisi on Monday in Naknek sentenced Pedersen to 75 years in prison with 40 suspended, plus 10 years probation.
