I want to express appreciation for Eric Fry's very thorough articles on the West Douglas golf course project. It's unfortunate that the Totem Creek investors have felt themselves in a time and money bind. They evidently were unwilling or unable to provide the wherewithal to contract with an Audubon expert on the sustainable development of golf courses. This left the CBJ Community Development Department with the responsibility of developing equivalent standards to be met as required by the Assembly in its RFP. I am very glad that no corners have been cut in an effort to expedite this very impactful project. The golf course is proposed for an essentially untouched natural environment and would have long-term consequences for land use in Juneau. My thanks to those dedicated CBJ professionals who are committed to doing their job in the face of false accusations, verbal abuse, Juneau Empire editorial attacks, and both overt and behind-the-scene pressure. I am glad that I live in Juneau where the "political climate" can sometimes sustain such integrity.
