Locals and summer residents took to the hand holds at the Rock Dump last Saturday to compete in the gym's annual Summer Climbing Competition. The scene was decidedly laid back as climbers tried various routes to test their skill. Onlookers cheered and offered support.
Jessie Palomino, operations manager for the gym, said this competition is really just like any old climbing session, just with a scorecard.
"There's not a lot of pressure because there's a lot of people climbing at once," he said.
Routes are numbered 1-35, and get progressively harder as the numerical value increases. But, the higher the number on the route, the more points it's worth. Palomino said it's a fine line competitors have to negotiate in order to place well.
"You can't get burned out too fast," he said.
