WASHINGTON - The State Department expressed outrage Monday over warnings by the militant Islamic group Hezbollah that American envoys would be sent home in coffins if the United States were to move its embassy in Israel to Jerusalem.
``Such violent threats deserve condemnation of the entire international community,'' spokesman Philip Reeker said. ``This illustrates once again why that organization is on our list of terrorist organizations.''
Hezbollah leader Sheik Hassan Nasrallah said Sunday in Lebanon that if the embassy were shifted to Jerusalem, ``the honorable (Arab) people can turn your embassy to rubble and return your diplomats in coffins.''
He spoke at a rally in the southern Lebanese village of Jibsheet.
President Clinton said Friday that the United States was considering whether to move the embassy from Tel Aviv before the end of the year.
He said he was reviewing the issue in light of what he regarded as a greater willingness by the Israelis than the Palestinians to take risks for peace at the recently concluded summit in Camp David.
