Army soldier found dead in Anchorage

ANCHORAGE - A Fort Richardson soldier from Ohio was found dead in his Anchorage home.

Army officials are investigating the death of Anthony S. Schmachtenberger, a 30-year-old staff sergeant.

The Anchorage Daily News reported the body was discovered Wednesday afternoon by two soldiers sent to find Schmachtenberger when he did not show up for work.

Schmachtenberger was an artilleryman from Constantinople, Ohio.

He was assigned to the 4th Airborne Brigade Combat Team, 25th Infantry Division. He joined the Army in March 1999 and came to Fort Richardson in April 2006.

The Army Criminal Investigation Command is investigating the death.
