Only in Alaska

Posted: Thursday, August 01, 2002

In November I will be in Juneau on my way to Haines to photograph eagles for two weeks. This is an annual vacation for me. I have been planning this for the past year and I have spent thousands of dollars on new equipment. It is hard to explain but I get a great deal of pleasure from photographing the eagles. I have been to Kodiak Island photographing grizzly bears and I been to Denali Park where I got a lot of really good work done.

It is very heartening to see the Game Board staffed with such capable people. I hope that that it will continue for the benefit of people like myself. In my area when I go out to photograph eagles the closest I can get is 500 feet. When I am using my 800mm lens at 500 feet the result is dismal. Only in Alaska can one experience a closeness that is very exciting photographically.

I offer my congratulations to Gov. Knowles for working for those of us who receive a great deal of pleasure just being in Alaska.
