• Juneau Youth Wrestling Club - wrestling camp: The Juneau Youth Wrestling Club will be hosting a camp featuring Ohio State University assistant coach Ken Ramsey. There will also be other accomplished wrestlers from throughout the country at the camp. All sessions will be held at Marie Drake Gym from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. with a 30-45 minute lunch break at noon. Friday-Sunday, Aug. 5-7

• Juneau Freewheelers cycling club - Tour of Juneau: Times and locations are TBA for this three-day stage race, which includes the Eaglecrest Hill Climb on Friday night, a 40-kilometer (25-mile) time trial on Saturday and the Auke Rec. • Territorial Sportsmen, Inc. - 59th Annual Golden North Salmon Derby: The derby weigh-in stations are open from 7:30 a.m. to 7 p.m. on Friday and Saturday and from 7:30 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Sunday at Amalga Harbor, Auke Bay and Douglas Harbor, with the packer open in the mid-morning through late-afternoon on the fishing grounds north of town. Derby tickets are available at several locations around town and they must be validated before you can fish. The derby raises money for college scholarships. Info: On the Web at

Saturday, Aug. 6

• Southeast Road Runners club - Frank Maier Marathon and Douglas Island Half-Marathon: Races start at Savikko Park in Douglas and follow an out-and-back course along the North Douglas Highway. The marathon (26.2 miles) starts at 7 a.m. with a 6 a.m. start for slower runners and a 6:45 a.m. start for wheelchair racers. The half-marathon (13.1 miles) starts at 9 a.m. with an 8 a.m. start for slower runners and an 8:45 a.m. start for wheelchair racers. • Juneau-Douglas High School - cross country practice: Practices will be Monday through Friday, starting at 3 p.m. Monday, Wednesday and Friday practices will be at Juneau-Douglas High School. Please contact coaches Guy Thibodeau and Merry Ellefson for practice sites on Tuesday and Thursday. All athletes must have a current physical to practice. • Juneau-Douglas High School - swimming and diving practice: There will be a mandatory meeting for all JDHS students interesting in joining the swimming and diving team Monday, Aug. 8 at 2:15 p.m. All students should meet at the front door of JDHS at 2:15 p.m. Swim practice will be at 3 p.m. while diving practice will be at 7 p.m. Swimmers should bring dryland, swim workout clothes and completed physical screening form. • Juneau-Douglas High School - tennis practice: The Crimson Bears practice from 10:30 a.m. to noon Monday through Friday beginning Aug. 1 through Aug. 23 at the JRC and 3 p.m. to 4 p.m. Monday, Wednesday and Friday at the JRC. The second practice time will be offered first to those students who work during the day. All incoming JDHS 9th-12th grade boys and girls are invited. Experienced and new players are welcome. • LIFE On The Move Volleyball - Registration is still being accepted for the Aug. 1-2 camp for high school students. The high school camp will take place from 8:30-11:30 a.m. and 1-4 p.m. each day at the Dzantik'i Heeni gym. • Juneau Parks and Recreation adult volleyball registration - The Juneau Parks and Recreation team registration takes place at 5:15 p.m. on Thursday, Aug. 11, in the Assembly Chambers. Men's and women's volleyball team manager packets are available at the Parks and Rec office, located on the second floor of the municiple building, room 218. Late registration will be taken Friday, Aug. 12, at the Parks & Rec office from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. There will be a $10 late fee charge. Info: 586-5226



• JFYL Cheerleading conditioning and tryouts- Meets from 5:30-7:30 p.m. on Tuesday and Thursday nights during July at Glacier Valley School. Conditioning will begin for all girls interested in trying out to be a Juneau-Douglas High School Crimson Bears JV or Varsity high school football cheerleader. There is a parent meeting at Glacier Valley Gym on August 1 at 6 p.m. On Aug. 2-4 from 5:30 p.m. to 8 p.m. at Glacier Valley Gym, there are tryout clinics. Tryouts take place August 5 from 5:30 p.m. to 8 p.m. Assessment clinics occur from Aug. 8-10 at the Riverbend School covered area from 6 p.m. to 7 p.m. Late registration ends August 10, team assignments are due August 14. • Kids sports camps - The JRC/Alaska Club is hosting three kids sports camps in August, Monday through Friday. Soccer takes place Aug. 1-5, basketball goes form Aug. 8-12, and volleyball and wallyball plays from Aug. 15-19. The camps run from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. and is open for children ages 5-12. These all-day camps are taking place at the JRC/Alaska Club Valley location. They are for kids ages 5-12 and space is still available. They are open to the public. • Juneau box lacrosse practice - Meet from 6-9 p.m. on Wednesdays at Treadwell Arena in Douglas to learn about this version of lacrosse that is played inside a hockey rink. NHL greats Wayne Gretzky and Mario Lemieux used to play box lacrosse in the summer and credit the game with sharpening their passing skills. The game is played on a concrete or artificial turf floor, and about 20 players are expected during each Wednesday's drop-in lacrosse session. Info: Jim Craig, 364-2393 (home) or 465-4236 (work).

• Thunder Mountain sports camps - Thunder Mountain sports camps feature a positive and fun environment and coaching from local coaches, high school coacesh and college coaches from throughout the country. The advanced soccer camp runs July 25-29 for $100 and the baseball camp runs July 25-29 for $75. Info: Juneau Parks and Recreation, 586-5226.

• Juneau Women's Golf League - The Juneau Women's Golf League is looking for experience and new players interested in playing golf. The league meets every Thursday at 6 p.m. at the Mendenhall Golf Course. There will be a shotgun start. Golf club rentals are available and cost is $9.45 per round, plus tax. • Zach Gordon Youth Center climbing wall - Climbing wall hours are 5-7 p.m. on Mondays, and 3:30-7 p.m. on Wednesdays, Fridays and Saturdays. The climbing wall can be used by people of all ages. Climbers age 20-younger climb free, while adults 21-older pay $5 to use the wall. Youth-adult interaction is encouraged, so an adult climbing with a youth pays no fee. • Evening masters swimming program - The Augustus Brown pool hosts a twice-weekly evening masters swimming program. The program will meet from 6:30-7:30 p.m. on Tuesdays and Thursdays, and is designed to promote and improve the physical and mental well-being of adults age 19-older. • Treadwell Arena schedule - The Treadwell Arena will have summer drop-in activities will be as follows: Drop-in gym is Monday-Friday, 3:30-5:30 p.m. Drop-in Floor Hockey/Gym is Monday and Wednesday, 6-8 p.m., and Drop-in Roller Hockey is Tuesday and Thursday, 6-8 p.m. Schedules for summer drop-in activities are also available on our Web site. • Juneau Archery Club youth shooting - Archery shooting is held on Friday nights, with sessions at 6 p.m., 7 p.m. and 8 p.m. Space is limited and is available on a first-come, first-served basis. • Basketball/volleyball court rentals available - The Juneau Community Schools program has basketball/volleyball court rental times available from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Saturdays at Dzantik'i Heeni Middle School. The cost to rent the court is $20 per hour, which must be paid at the time of rental. This is for adult activities only. Info: Juneau Community Schools, 463-1717.
