Welcome to the 63rd annual Golden North Salmon Derby and thank you for participating. Territorial Sportsmen Inc. (TSI) is proud to sponsor this fun-filled event for the community of Juneau.
The derby would not be possible without the many dedicated volunteers that organize and conduct the derby. Equally important are the many generous Juneau merchants, professionals and businesses that donate money and prizes to the derby.
Derby participants generously donate the silver and king salmon they catch during the three-day weekend so that TSI can sell them. All proceeds from the fish sales are used to provide scholarships to graduating seniors in Juneau.
There are several significant changes to the derby this year. We no longer have a prize for catching a tagged salmon. This part of the event has been replaced with a chance for anyone purchasing a derby ticket to win $100,000 in a "high five" drawing. This is the first time that people can win a prize in the derby without fishing. People can support the derby by purchasing a ticket and have a chance to be drawn to play the "high five" lottery. One lucky person can win a minimun of $500, but they have a chance to win up to $100,000.
We have reduced the number of prizes to the top 50 largest fish, rather the 100 largest. For derby participants that means bigger and better prizes. Additionally, in an effort to save money so we can provide more scholarships, we have reduced expenses by not providing "the Packer" a boat where participants can weigh and drop off their fish.
Good luck fishing, be safe, and have fun.
