Volunteer firefighters needed

Posted: Sunday, August 01, 2010

KETCHIKAN - The Ketchikan Fire Department will host a volunteer recruitment and retention workshop on Aug. 3. Fire chiefs and community leaders from North Tongass, South Tongass, Ketchikan and Prince of Wales Island will gather to discuss local recruitment and retention issues. The workshop will be facilitated by representatives from the Alaska State Firefighters Association (ASFA), who will be on the road for the next two months to meet with volunteer fire departments throughout the state. The program is funded by a FEMA SAFER (Staffing for Adequate Fire and Emergency Response) grant, which ASFA received in 2006. The grant program compliments the current marketing campaign implemented by ASFA and includes statewide commercials and advertisements. The goal of the campaign is to reverse the declining trend of volunteer emergency responder involvement in Alaska. For information about the campaign, visit www.asfafireline.org.
