JUNEAU - The Juneau Community Foundation (JCF) announced that it has received a community grant totaling $15,000 from the Fred Meyer Fund.
This grant will launch the Juneau Youth Sports and Activity Fund, a fund which will support local sports organizations, recreational activities and extra-curricular educational opportunities for youth, grades K-12. This fund was initiated in response to the apparent public need for healthy, youth-oriented activity choices, and will be the first program of this nature to be established in Juneau.
The purpose of the fund will be to solicit grant requests from local nonprofit organizations and schools that offer healthy activities for youth. Initial grants will range from $500-$2,000, and will be given as Fred Meyer Juneau Youth Sports and Activity Fund grants. JCF will continue to seek corporate and individual contributions to this fund, with the goal of seeing it become a permanent endowment at JCF. Application forms will be available on the JCF website in October at www.juneaucf.org.
"The Fred Meyer Fund and its advisory committee members were particularly impressed by the successful track record of the Juneau Community Foundation and its programs," said Glynda Brockhoff, philanthropy coordinator for Fred Meyer stores and the Fred Meyer Fund. "We hope this community grant will help JCF continue the important work it is doing to enhance the welfare of the community. We are proud to be part of the Juneau community and are committed to helping where we can."
The community grants are funded by donations from Fred Meyer Associates and customer donations in the Make Change Count coin boxes at all check stands. The dollars collected through associate donations and coin boxes are combined and allocated by the advisory committees as community grants in the four western states where Fred Meyer operates.
