Helen Emily Laurent died July 22 in Juneau.
She was born on Dec. 9, 1930 to Hermine and Willi Kromat in Wheaton, Ill. She attended high school in Illinois and graduated with teaching credentials from the University of Illinois.
She worked as a teacher in Wheatridge, Colo. She met her husband, Tom, at nearby Berthoud Pass ski resort. They married and moved to Douglas in 1956.
Helen worked as a fourth grade teacher at Mt. Jumbo and Gastineau Schools in Douglas. She was an avid piano player and also gave lessons from her home.
She is survived by her husband Tom, sons Tom Jr, Creighton and Jim, daughters-in-law Margaret, Martha and Eleanor, and granddaughter Abigail.
A celebration of Helen's life will be held at 6 p.m., Sept. 10 at the Douglas United Methodist Church.
