The Gastineau Channel Little League Majors All-Star team swept Knik three games to zero after a 10-0, four-inning win Saturday to advance to the West Region tournament Aug. 6-15 in San Bernardino, Calif.
Juneau struck quickly behind a first-inning single from Jake Tanner, followed by a Jared Markovich RBI double.
Juneau plated all of its nine other runs in the fourth inning after Shane Mielke singled to start things off. Chase Barnum scored Mielke with a double, and Matt Cunningham belted a three-run homer to score Luke Paden and Barnum.
Markovich doubled to score Grant Ainsworth and Tanner, and Finn Collins also doubled to score Kaleb Tompkins and Markovich. Luke Paden scored Collins with an RBI groundout.
Knick had three hits in the bottom of the fourth, but was unable to get any runs across the plate.
Juneau ran through pool play with a 6-0 record.
Juniors win state
The Gastineau Channel Little League Juniors also won a West Region berth after knocking off Abbott O'Rabbitt 8-4 on Wednesday, taking the series in four games.
Juneau, the back-to-back Juniors Division state champions, advances to the West Region tournament in Laguna Niguel, Calif., beginning Aug. 3.
Juneau took a quick 2-0 lead after the first after back-to-back singles by Tod Baseden and Julian Minne. R.J. Markovich walked to load the bases. Jackson Pavitt hit a sacrifice fly, and Tanner Petrie executed a suicide squeeze to score pinch runner Nick Stewart.
AOR then scored one in the second and another in the third to tie things up heading into the fourth.
Juneau countered with four runs in the fourth with a leadoff single down the left-field line by Jeffrey Pusich. Gus Swanton smacked a double over the center fielder's head to score pinch runner Kellen Johansen, and Baseden singled and stole second.
A wild pitch by Alex Valdez, followed by an errant throw to third allowed Swanton to score, and Baseden scored all the way from second.
Stewart then scored on a double by Markovich to push Juneau ahead 6-2.
AOR got back within two in the fifth, but matched it with two of its own in the bottom half of the inning.
Nunaka Valley wins West Region berth over Juneau
The Nunaka Valley Little League All-Stars defeated Gastineau Channel Little League 15-0 in five innings in Game 4 of the 2010 Alaska Little League Softball Championship to win the best-of-5 series Friday at Melvin Park.
Nunaka advances to the West Region tournament in Tuscon, Ariz., for a shot at a Little League World Series bid,
Nunaka scored early and often, plating one run in the first and two in the second before blowing the game open with seven more in the third.
Pauline Tufi hit a three-run homer in the third, and Nunaka also turned in a sterling defensive effort, notching four double plays.
Sydney Smith picked up the win in the circle, and Kayla Emerson closed it out.
