Deer season opened in Unit 4 for bucks only on Aug. 1. The season for does and bucks is scheduled to begin on Sept. 15.
However, due to a significant conservation concern for deer populations in northern portions of the unit (Chichagof Island), it is anticipated that the doe season will be closed again this year. A later announcement will be issued when this occurs.
Hunters must have deer harvest tickets and a valid hunting license in their possession while hunting.
Harvest tickets must be validated in sequential order, and unused tickets must be carried while hunting.
In all hunts limited to one sex, evidence of sex must remain naturally attached to the meat, or antlers must remain naturally attached to the entire carcass, with or without viscera.
During the month of August, Fish and Game staff will be radio collaring does along the road system on the northeastern portion of Chichagof Island.
For safety purposes, all deer hunters in this area are asked to use caution and watch for posted signs in the vicinity where ADF&G staff is working.
