Park at Lena Point Picnic Area (finish line) and ride bike to Alaska Marine Highway Ferry Terminal Employee Parking Lot for race start at 10 a.m. Entrants must be JFA members ($10 individuals, $15 family), and there is a $5 race fee. Southeast Road Runners-Frank Maier Marathon/Douglas Island Half-Marathon: Meet at Savikko Park in Douglas, marathon starts at 8 a.m. (7 a.m. early start for slower runners and walkers), half-marathon starts at 9 a.m. Marathon is a 26.2-mile USTAC-certified course following the Douglas and North Douglas highways to past False Outer Point and back to Douglas. Marathon entry fee is $20, with t-shirts and medals to all participants. Half-marathon is 13.1-mile course along Douglas and North Douglas highways. Half-marathon entry fee is $5 pre-registration and $8 day of race. Barbecue at the Sandy Beach finish line for all runners, post-marathon social at 6 p.m. at downtown Bullwinkles. Juneau Sailing Club-2000 Rum Cup Challenge: Third round of four-round sailing event starts 10:30 a.m. Saturday near Mayflower Island in Douglas for an 18-mile sail to Admiralty Cove. Return of two-day event is Sunday with finish line at Sheep Creek, south of Juneau. Mandatory skippers' meeting at 8 a.m. at the Harbormaster's Office at Aurora Harbor. Juneau Parks and Recreation Saturday Hike: Meet at Eaglecrest Ski Area Parking Lot at 9:30 a.m. for a difficult 7-mile one-way hike to Naked Man lake, Mount Troy Ridge and Dan Moller Trail. Hike features 3,005 feet in elevation gain. Wear waterproof hiking boots, warm layers of clothing and bring plenty of food and water. No dogs or firearms, please. Info: 586-5226.
Juneau Youth Football League `draft' The tryouts and team draft for the Juneau Youth Football League's peewee, junior and senior divisions will take place for football players ages 8-15 on Saturday, Aug. 5, at Adair-Kennedy Memorial Park. The peewee division draft is at 10 a.m., junior division draft is noon and senior division draft is at 2 p.m. Players can register at 9 a.m. on Saturday (parents need to bring a copy of the player's birth certificate and a current physical is needed). Forms are available from 5-6 p.m. at the Adair-Kennedy football gear shed or at any branch of Alaska Pacific Bank. SEARHC school physicals Southeast Alaska Regional Health Consortium physician's assistant Karl Bausler will provide free sports physicals for students planning on participating in Juneau-Douglas High School sports programs.
