ANCHORAGE - U.S. Sens. Ted Stevens and Lisa Murkowski are among 10 Republican senators who are urging President Bush to issue an executive order for a seismic survey of energy resources in the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge's coastal plain.
The senators made their request Friday in a letter to the president, saying the energy crisis "now borders on an emergency."
The letter says such a survey of oil and gas resources would be informative only and environmentally nonintrusive, roughly equivalent to photography.
The senators note that the last seismic survey was done there 25 years ago.
The letter also notes that while ANWR exploration is prohibited without an act of Congress, that prohibition does not cover seismic testing.
