ANCHORAGE - Lu Young, the wife of U.S. Rep. Don Young, has died. She was 67.
A spokeswoman for the Alaska Republican said Lu Young died Saturday night or early Sunday at the couple's home in Great Falls, Va.
Meredith Kenny said the cause of death is unknown but is believed to have stemmed from natural causes. The Youngs were married for 46 years.
"He's obviously very upset right now," Kenny said of the 19-term congressman. "They were inseparable."
Young, Alaska's lone congressman, refuted rumors in 2003 that he was considering leaving office because of Lu's health. At a press conference he introduced his wife, who had what Young called a slight stroke six months earlier.
"We're here as long as possible. I just want to let you know, the Youngs do not retire," Lu Young said. "There is nothing wrong with Mrs. Young."
According to Young's congressional biography, Lu Young was a local bookkeeper when the couple met in the Athabascan village of Fort Yukon. Don Young was working as an elementary school teacher at the village school at the time.
Fort Yukon has remained the couple's home base in Alaska.
Lu Young's survivors include her husband, their two daughters and 14 grandchildren.
