JUNEAU - U.S. Sen. Mark Begich spent part of the weekend on the Gulf Coast, seeing first hand the impacts of the April oil spill.
A spokeswoman for the Alaska Democrat says it was a trip Begich has been wanting to take for some time and that he visited the region with some staff.
The trip, according to his office, included an overview of the federal response to the Gulf of Mexico spill and a meeting with response workers including Alaskans.
Oil spill response legislation is pending in Congress.
