As seen from the top of Mount Juneau, Gastineau Channel courses its way from the Inside Passage to the city proper. The scenic channel has served area residents for many hundreds of years as a route for trade and migration, and more recently as an artery for industry and development. At center is the refurbished Douglas harbor, now home to sport-fishing boats, as well as industrial and commercial fishing vessels. To the right of the harbor is the old town of Douglas, built originally in support of the Treadwell Mine, which, 100 years ago, heralded the birth of the modern industrial age of Juneau, and of a brighter tomorrow for its residents.
