PALMER - A Palmer musher was convicted last week of failing to provide humane care for his recreational sled dogs.

Doug Bartko was convicted of 39 counts.

Magistrate David Zwink imposed fines late Tuesday of $5,600.

Matanuska-Susitna animal care authorities in May took 25 dogs from Bartko's care.

They found the remains of three other dogs.

The borough revoked Bartko's kennel license and instituted forfeiture proceedings for the 25 dogs.

Bartko is appealing both cases in Superior Court.
