FAIRBANKS - Candidates for Alaska's top offices are headed to the Interior to campaign for the Aug. 27 primary.
The Greater Fairbanks Chamber of Commerce will hold a two-hour forum on Tuesday for candidates for lieutenant governor. The event is free and open to the public.
The Republican Party field of five candidates includes three longtime and high-profile politicians: Former House Speaker Gail Phillips of Homer, Senate Majority Leader Loren Leman of Anchorage and Sen. Robin Taylor of Wrangell. Also running are Wasilla Mayor Sarah Palin and Paul Wieler of Anchorage. All but Wieler have indicated they will attend.
Democratic candidate Ernie Hall of Anchorage and Green Party candidate Diane Benson of Eagle River are also expected to attend.
Libertarian candidate Al A. Anders and Alaskan Independence Party candidate Daniel DeNardo, both from Anchorage, will not attend.
The Tanana Valley League of Women Voters has scheduled a forum of gubernatorial candidates for Thursday evening in the Sun Spot Show Hall at the fairgrounds. Lt. Gov. Fran Ulmer will attend, but U.S. Sen. Frank Murkowski has an obligation in Anchorage.
