SAN DIEGO - The Alaska Lady Hoops' Elite Basketball Team wrapped up a successful tour through the Lower 48 on Thursday with a split of two games in San Diego to finish 13-5 on the trip.
Alaska Lady Hoops ended up sixth out of about 120 teams in the MidSummer Nights Basketball Tournament, coach Ryan Hales said.
After beating Yakima 65-40, the Alaskans lost the fourth-place game to the Bay Area Warriors, 43-40, before heading to the airport.
"The kids did pretty phenomenal," Hales said. "They were the talk of the tournament."
The team includes high school stars from across the state, including Brittnay Fenumiai and Karli Brakes of Juneau, Jenna Johnson of Wasilla, Anna Simmers of Anchorage Christian Schools, and Lori Clifford of Chugiak.
Hales said the trip was especially useful for players looking to secure a college scholarship. He said more than a dozen coaches from such Division I schools as Utah State, Gonzaga and Air Force were on hand.
"For most part, despite being from different high schools, they played together like they've been playing together since they were five," Hales said.
