Daniel Thomas Melville died in Juneau on July 23, 2010. He was 18 years old.

Daniel was born in Juneau on Aug. 28, 1991. He was the youngest son of Beth and Ken Melville, and the youngest brother of Catherine, Sam and Henry Melville.

Daniel attended Auke Bay Elementary School, Dzantik'i Heeni Middle School and Juneau-Douglas High School. In June, he graduated from Juneau-Douglas High School. He was looking forward to spending some time not being in school.

Daniel was a natural-born naturalist, and he never met an animal he didn't like (except slugs - he didn't like slugs.) He could spend hours poring over books about birds, beasts and bugs, or peering at them in the wild or in an aquarium. He was known for being loyal and kind, and was always willing to spend time with the people he cared about. Daniel is very dearly loved and will be sorely missed by his family and friends.

Daniel was preceded in death by his grandfather Robert Melville.

Daniel is survived by his grandparents, Helen and Forester Newick of Florham Park, N.J.; Eleanor Melville of Owego, N.Y.; Roberta Melville of Binghamton, N.Y.; parents Beth and Ken Melville of Juneau; sister and brothers, Catherine of Juneau; Sam of San Diego; Henry of Juneau; aunts and uncles Sheila Edwards and Brian Newick of San Rafael, Calif.; Tom Melville of Juneau; Amy Melville and John Schroll of Charlottesville, Va.; Judith Melville Quigley and Peter Quigley of Owego, N.Y.; Lee and Glenn Newick of Houston; Linda Lindroth and Craig Newick of New Haven, Conn.; cousins James and Carrie Schroll; Zachary Newick; Jared and Katie Quigley; and Grace and Graham Newick, as well as many great-aunts and uncles and other extended family.

A memorial service will be held at 7 p.m. Thursday at St. Paul's Catholic Church in the Valley, 9055 Atlin Drive. All are welcome.

In lieu of flowers, please make donations to Juneau Watershed Partnership, P.O. Box 20649, Juneau, AK 99802, or bring flowers home to your own family table in memory of Daniel.
