Altruistic on somebody else's time and dime

Posted: Wednesday, August 06, 2003

Alaska's legislative majority will certainly love Rory Schneeberger's comments (July 28) urging our educators to ignore declining pay standards in favor of teacher altruism. Between the legislative majority and the governor, our state government already has managed to disenfranchise many needful Alaskans who lack political clout. Educators are only another, and perhaps a bit more difficult target.

It is easy to urge someone else to bear the pain. If Mr. Schneeberger truly feels altruistic, he should donate his own salary to the state and federal governments. After all, they have provided the educators, infrastructure and institutions that now allows him to earn his present federal salary.
