May 7 the chief of police sent every alcohol-license holder in Juneau a warning letter telling him or her about upcoming compliance checks. Everyone had fair warning, but when they then do the checks the first thing they do is complain that everyone is in compliance; that all the stores cheated - not one word of congratulations you passed, but you cheated. No one in the alcohol business wants to serve or sell alcohol to minors; when they don't, they should be congratulated, not called cheaters. To answer Marc Wheeler's question on "why a business would hold back an ID," state law states that any person under the age of 21 that enters an establishment to purchase alcohol is subject to a $1,000 fine. The law makes no exceptions. My congratulations to those stores that were in compliance.
