What's next? A war on prosperity?

So, I was thinking about this new targeted tax proposition and a couple of things came to mind - namely DDT and laser-guided bombs.

Sound off on the important issues at

If you are old enough to remember the late 1960s and early '70s, maybe you recall DDT, the chemical our government used in the "war on mosquitoes." The goal was to stop the spread of malaria by killing mosquitoes. Although successful at killing bugs, it was discovered the chemical also made birds have thin shelled eggs that almost caused the extinction of some species of birds, including condors and eagles in California.

All of us remember the "war on terror." Although laser-guided missiles almost always hit their target, usually there are also innocent people killed. And periodically they totally miss their target or are mis-guided and then the results can be disastrous.

That leads us to the targeted taxes. If Ballot Measure 2 passes, there is little doubt it will be a heavy blow to the travel industry and the Alaska families that rely on our visitors to make their living. But it does make you wonder who are the innocent bystanders that will become casualties in this "war on prosperity."

Please join me in voting no on Ballot Measure 2.
