Village mayor charged with bootlegging

ANCHORAGE - The mayor of the village of Shaktoolik is accused of trying to smuggle a dozen bottles of liquor into the dry village of Golovin.

Edgar M. Jackson Sr., 63, is charged with bootlegging. He crab fishes in Golovin.

Troopers said Jackson told authorities he planned to use the alcohol himself rather than sell it. Troopers found the bottles in the mayor's luggage as he was getting ready to fly out of Nome.

He was arrested July 26.

Like Golovin, Shaktoolik is a dry village, where the sale and importation of alcohol is prohibited.
