United States Coast Guard personnel prepare a cargo net in the Army National Guard hanger at the Juneau airport Monday. The C-130 in the background was picking up USCG members of Operation Arctic Crossroads for transport to Kotzebue. According to a USCG press release, more than 70 Air and Army National Guard, U.S. Public Health Services and USCG personnel have deployed to Kotzebue to begin the 10-day initiative to provide medical, dental, optometry, boating safety awareness and other community services to eight boroughs thoughout northern Alaska. Last year OAC doctors examined 166 patients, optometrists 149, dentists more than 20, and veterinarians treated more than 1,168 animals. The USCG tested four types of small boats and is scheduled to test the 28-foot jet boat Metal Shark this operation.
