ANCHORAGE - A North Pole man is accused of killing his wife with a sledgehammer.

Andrew Victor Thomas was charged in Palmer Superior Court on Thursday with first- and second-degree murder in the death of his wife, Susanna Braden.

The Anchorage Daily News reports Braden was found dead with a sledgehammer on her chest Wednesday at a cabin near Mile 49 of the Parks Highway. There also was a knife blade protruding from her chin.

Court documents say she had "large indentations" on her head and multiple cuts to her face and head.

She had sought refuge from her husband at a friend's home. According to court documents, he confronted her early Wednesday morning. He allegedly returned a few hours later, and a man said he saw Thomas grab a knife and start stabbing his wife.
