Business Profile: Bill Gillette

Posted: Tuesday, August 07, 2001

Title and Firm: Bill Gillette is the co-owner of Fitness Plus Gym.

Services: Fitness Plus Gym is a family-oriented gym that specializes in body building and strength training.

One of Fitness Plus' strengths is helping clients rehabilitate through strength training after they finish physical therapy, bridging the gap between physical therapy and full recovery, Gillette said. Fitness Plus also offers a strength training program that is specially designed to control an elderly person's weight and blood pressure.

In addition, Gillette does a lot of work with coaches to help students with their strength training, conditioning and agility. Fitness Plus partnered with coaches in helping some football linemen incorporate karate in their movements, resulting in better skilled and more effective players, said Gillette.

Background: Gillette has been in the fitness business for 40 years, including operating and owning Perfectly Fit Family Health and Fitness Center in California for 14 years. He also won the bodybuilding title of "Mr. Western America" in 1990. He is a certified trainer and studied at Stanford University and later earned a master's degree in exercise physiology at the University of the Pacific in California.

After a car accident six years ago, Gillette was almost paralyzed and was told that he would never be able to lift weights again. But through hard work and physical therapy, he said he now has the strength to compete once again.

Quotable: "I believe (that) with determination anything can be achieved. I do not believe in the word 'can't.'"

Family: Gillette is engaged to the co-owner of Fitness Plus, Laurie Tinney. He has five grandchildren and a daughter, Angela, who also lives in Juneau. "The reason that I moved to Juneau almost two years ago was because of my daughter and the desire to be closer to my family."
