The following editorial appeared in today's San Jose Mercury News:
We were going to snarl at George W. Bush for taking a month's vacation until it sank in that he's going to his ranch.
When Ronald Reagan went to his ranch, we understood. It was near Santa Barbara. Enough said.
The terrain around the Bush ranch is less travel-brochure friendly. As a New York Times editorial described it (we haven't been invited ourselves): "Visitors to Mr. Bush's spread may see a brown, flat prairie relieved by a patch of canyons and woods off a creek, but to the president it is paradise."
Not to perpetuate the recent California-Texas unpleasantness over energy, but a month in Central Texas in August is somebody's idea of a vacation?
