Title and firm: Owner, Kelly's Hair Studio.
Services: Stoinich specializes in color treatments for hair, including highlighting, design work and corrective color. She also gives hair cuts for men and women.
Background: In 1987, Stoinich was encouraged to pursue hairstyling work by Toni Hildebrand, former owner of the Priority One hairstyling shop. She attended the Academy of Hair Design in Anchorage for her basic training, then took advanced courses in hair coloring at the ABBA Academy in San Francisco and Gene Juarez in Seattle.
In April 1999, Stoinich opened Kelly's Hair Studio, which shares space on Industrial Boulevard with Kimberly Stadman's Kimberly's Hair Studio. Stoinich, who has an instructor's license, has instructed a number of students in cosmetic techniques, and manages the retail area of Kimberly's Hair Studio.
She has honed her coloring technique with time and schooling, Stoinich said. She uses foils to add color to hair, picking out the strands in question with a foiling comb and wrapping them in foil to separate and define the color.
A blend of color is often required to achieve the desired effect, Stoinich said.
"It's usually a triage of colors," she said. "We specialize in ... a lot of detail work in color, sometimes using more than two colors to achieve the overall goal."
Family: Stoinich was born in Waterloo, Iowa, and moved to Juneau in 1985. She has two daughters, Amanda and Alasa.
Prices: Style and color consultations are free, Stoinich said. Prices for hair color range from $60 to $125, and cuts cost from $30 to $42.50. If a student stylist gives the cut, prices range between $10 and $20.
The future: The retail line of products soon will be expanded, Stoinich said, and more services will be offered, including pedicures, manicures and facials. Stoinich will give facials, and a nail specialist is being hired.
Contact information: Kelly's Hair Studio is located at 2525 Industrial Boulevard. The number is 789-7367; Stoinich recommends making reservations up to a week in advance.
