Juneau Freewheelers Bicycle Club - Tour of Juneau-Blueberry Hill Climb: Meet at 5:30 p.m. on Douglas side of Douglas Bridge for a 6:30 p.m. race start. Course is to the top of Blueberry Hill (distance TBA). Riders will start at 30-second intervals this year, even though this stage has been a mass-start hill climb in past years. Juneau-Douglas High School football - The Crimson Bears open their season against the Kenai Central Kardinals in a non-conference game, junior varsity 5 p.m. and varsity 8 p.m. at Adair-Kennedy Memorial Park.
Juneau Freewheelers Bicycle Club - Tour of Juneau-False Outer Point Time Trial: Meet at 9 a.m. at the False Outer Point parking lot for a 10 a.m. race start. Southeast Road Runners Club - Treadwell Twosome Traverse: Meet at 8:30 a.m. at Savikko Park in Douglas for a 9 a.m. race start. This two-person relay is a fund-raiser for the Juneau-Douglas High School cross-country running teams. Runners will complete a five-kilometer course (3.1 miles) along the Historic Treadwell Gold Mine Trails, with partners heading in opposite directions around the same loop. Individual times will be kept for Empire Cup points, but the team times will be used for awards. Categories are for male, female and mixed teams. Glacier Swim Club - Blue/Gold Invitational: This meet for GSC swimmers only concludes the team's summer program. The meet is from 7-10 a.m. at Augustus G. Brown Swimming Pool.

Juneau Douglas Department of Parks and Recreation Saturday hike - Meet at 9:30 a.m. at the Spaulding Meadows Trailhead, Mile 12.3 Glacier Highway, for possible hikes up the Spaulding Meadows Trail and/or Auke View Trail. The group will decide the exact destination and hike length. This is a moderate hike of about seven miles with 1,700 feet elevation gain, depending on the group's decision. Wear waterproof hiking boots or rubber boots (especially since the meadows can get pretty wet), wear warm layers of clothing, and bring plenty of food and water. No dogs or firearms allowed. Juneau Youth Football League registration and tryouts - Registration and tryouts for the JYFL will be held at 10 a.m. on Saturday, Aug. 10, for all divisions. Players who went to sessions on Aug. 3 or Aug. 6 do not need to attend. If you are a returning player and wish to stay on the same team please call 789-3001 and inform JYFL of your decision. You must have a current physical, the registration form and registration fee. If you are new to the JYFL, a copy of your birth certificate is needed at time of registration. If you are unable to attend tryouts you can still register by mail and you will be placed on a team. Registration forms can be downloaded from the Web site, http://www.juneau.com/jyfl. Juneau Youth Football League cheerleading clinic - Two cheerleading clinics will take place on Saturday, Aug. 10, at Glacier Valley Elementary School (use the Jennifer Street entrance of the gym). Registration opens at 8:30 a.m. for both clinics, with the one for ages 8-10 running from 9 a.m. to noon and the one for ages 11-15 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Registration fee is $10. All participants should wear comfortable athletic clothing and gym shoes. Cheerleading basics will be taught and all potential JYFL cheerleaders are encouraged to attend. Juneau-Douglas High School Swimming & Diving first practice - All JDHS students, grades 9-12, who are interested in participating in the swimming and diving program should report to Room 300 in Marie Drake at 2:30 p.m. on Monday, Aug. 12, for a meeting. Swim practice will be held afterward, with diving practice at 7:15 p.m. the same day. The 2:30 p.m. meeting is for all swimmers and divers. Summer physicals for Juneau-Douglas High School athletes - Sports physicals for high school athletes are available at Zach Gordon Youth Center from 1:30-4:30 p.m. on Tuesdays starting on July 16. Carl Bausler, who works at the Juneau-Douglas High School Teen Health Center during the school year, gives the free physicals during the summers at Zach Gordon. The service is available to incoming freshmen and returning high school students only. Parents or guardians need to sign a consent form before the physical, which is available at Zach Gordon. All high school athletes need to have current physicals on file before being allowed to participate in team practices. Appointments are needed for each physical. Youth open gym - Meet from 8-11 p.m. on Saturdays (Aug. 10, 17 and 24) at Dzantik'i Heeni Middle School gym. Friday youth open gyms at Floyd Dryden Middle School are on hiatus until the school year starts again in the fall. Youth open gyms are free for students in grades 5-12.
