Conway leads Griffons to win

Posted: Wednesday, August 09, 2000

Juneau's Rob Conway helped the Nevada (Mo.) Griffons move into the round of eight Tuesday at the 48-team, double-elimination National Baseball Congress World Series in Wichita, Kan.

Conway, a 1996 Juneau-Douglas High School graduate, was 2-for-4, driving in a run and scoring once as the Griffons eliminated the Oklahoma City Sox 11-2 in a game called after seven innings by the seven-run mercy rule. Conway batted twice in the first inning as Nevada sent 13 batters to the plate and scored eight runs. Conway, who will be a senior third baseman at Iowa State this fall, played designated hitter and batted in the clean-up spot for the Griffons.

The Griffons will play the Lake Erie (Mich.) Monarchs in an elimination game this afternoon.

In other NBC action, the last Alaska League team in the tournament stayed alive as the Kenai Peninsula Oilers eliminated the El Dorado (Kan.) Broncos, winning 11-1 in a game called after five innings because of the 10-run rule. The Oilers will play the Hays (Kan.) Larks Thursday afternoon in another elimination game.

The only remaining undefeated teams in the tournament are the Liberal (Kan.) BeeJays and San Francisco Seals. The other surviving teams are Athletes in Action (Ohio) and the Clarinda (Iowa) A's. On Tuesday, Kenai leadoff hitter Danny Garcia continued his hot streak by going 3-for-4 with a double, four RBIs and two runs scored. Garcia has gone 7-for-10 with two homers, a triple, a double, 10 RBIs and six runs scored in his last two games.

Other leaders for Kenai Tuesday were Jeremy Reed, who went 3-for-3 with two doubles, an RBI and a run scored; Hunter Brown with two RBIs; and the trio of Jason Walker, Randall Shelley and Jackson Coleman with two runs scored apiece. Pitcher Tyler Johnson held the Broncos to just three hits, all doubles, to keep the Broncos from eliminating both Alaska teams in the tournament. Earlier El Dorado eliminated the Alaska Goldpanners of Fairbanks.
