JUNEAU - Alaska Gov. Sean Parnell is seeking fishery disaster relief for Yukon River residents.

Parnell on Friday sent a letter to Commerce Secretary Gary Locke, asking for the declaration because of poor returns of Chinook salmon on the river.

If a disaster declaration is issued, that won't mean immediate assistance. Parnell's office says a federal appropriation also is necessary to provide the funding.
