Citizens bombard Anchorage with cost-cutting ideas

Posted: Sunday, August 09, 2009

ANCHORAGE - Stop watering the grass when it's raining. Bring back the photo radar. Get rid of some hanging flower baskets downtown. Legalize pot and then tax it.

Those are some of the cost-cutting suggestions Anchorage Mayor Dan Sullivan got this week after asking for ideas on where to cut the city's $400 million plus budget and fix a new $9 million deficit.

The city has received more than 600 ideas through its Web site.

Among the suggestions: dim city office lights and lower the thermostat, maintain and repair streets rather than building new ones, tax studded tires or allow and tax poker rooms.

Sullivan says he expected to get a good response but not so many ideas so fast.
