ANCHORAGE - Anchorage police say they shot and killed a black bear and her two small cubs after the animals broke into a house, then returned and tried again.
Police shot the mother bear on a doorstep Saturday as it was trying to get into the Anchorage home. Officers then shot one cub while it was crawling on the roof and the second while it was on a deck. A third ran off.
Homeowner Madeline Knowlton says the bears first broke in Thursday so she installed a dead bolt on the door.
Police spokeswoman Anita Shell says the animals were killed because they were threatening human safety or property.
