McCann takes lead into the final stage

Posted: Sunday, August 10, 2003

Mike McCann, a 50-something rider from Whitehorse, Yukon Territory, takes a 1-minute lead into today's third and final stage of the Tour of Juneau cycling stage race.

McCann, one of two Whitehorse riders in this year's Tour, finished sixth in Friday night's opening 5-mile Eaglecrest Hill Climb stage. But he made up for it in Saturday's 25-mile North Douglas Time Trial, winning the stage by 1 minute, 18 seconds (including a 20-second time bonus).

"I had a good ride," McCann said after Saturday's stage along the North Douglas Highway from the Kowee Creek Bridge to a turnaround near False Outer Point and back. "This was a pretty nice course. It's got everything in it."

"Mike McCann blew past us," said Juneau's Dave Bartlett, who finished seventh in Saturday's stage where riders started in 30-second intervals (fastest going last) in a race against the clock. "The headwind was especially tough, especially by the (North Douglas) boat ramp. The wind was pretty swirly."

Saturday's ride gave McCann a combined time of 1 hour, 14 minutes, 12 seconds - exactly 1 minute ahead of second-place cyclist John McConnochie of Juneau and 1:04 ahead of third-place rider Steve Williams of Haines - as the riders head into today's 52-mile Auke Rec Long Course Road Race. McConnochie finished third in both stages, earning an 8-second time bonus in each, while Williams took fifth in the hill climb and second in the time trial to earn a 12-second time bonus.

Michelle Boisvert of Haines leads the women's overall standings with an overall time of 1:25:27, nearly 10 minutes ahead of Juneau's Betsy Fischer, the only other woman to complete the first two stages. Boisvert said the wind didn't bother her Saturday.

"I don't mind the wind," Boisvert said. "It's windy all the time in Haines. We can ride out in three directions, and when we ride to Lutak (near the Haines ferry terminal) there's always a wind. It's a blast."

"She's a good triathlete and swimmer," Williams said of Boisvert. "When I went for my trip (this summer to Portugal) she was just hanging with our group (Williams, Boisvert, Dan Harrington, Chip Lende and Heather Lende) in Haines. When I got back, she'd taken it over."

Juneau's Chris Chiles won Friday's stage, pulling away from a small pack at the finish of the mass-start race to win by 16 seconds (not including a 20-second bonus). Chris Scholes of Juneau took second place and earned a 12-second bonus, followed by McConnochie, Dan Kelliher of Sitka, Williams and McCann.

"I felt a lot better (Friday) than today," Chiles said. "Tomorrow's going to be fun."

"Chris Chiles had a beautiful ride (Friday)," McCann said. "Dan was dropped three times, but he kept fighting back. Chris Chiles was way ahead and then there were five of us together."

Today's stage starts at 10 a.m. near the Auke Bay Alaska Marine Highway ferry terminal and follows Glacier Highway to a turnaround at the end of the road near Echo Cove and back. The finish line is by the totem near the Auke Recreation Area picnic area.
