SKAGWAY - Three people died Friday after a small plane crashed off Mile 9 Dyea Road.
Skagway police alerted Alaska State Troopers to the crash at 5:14 p.m.
They said a single-engine aircraft had crashed and burned in a wooded area. The fire was confined to the airplane.
Identifying markings on the aircraft were destroyed by the fire.
The three bodies could not immediately be identified due to the fire. Troopers said the plane may have been registered in Sacramento, Calif. and the victims may have been from that area.
Troopers said the plane apparently had flown from Juneau to Skagway. No flight plan was filed but troopers believe the group landed in Skagway and had taken off for Yakutat.
A witness told Skagway police the plane took off and may have turned too soon toward a ridge line. The witness said the airplane engine appeared to stall as the plane tried to climb.
