On Saturday, July 23, Friends of Recycling filled a barge container with 23,740 pounds of magazines and catalogs. These have been shipped to Smurfit, a recycling center in Seattle, for reuse in manufacturing glossy paper.
The community thanks volunteers Laisne and Brad Waldron, Dean Blust, Michael Fleischhauer, Mary Diven, Jeanette Grossman, Shirley Campbell, Mike and DeeAnn Grummett, Barb Sharp, Rosie Slotnick, Brooke Munro, Scott Burton, Vaughn Wescott, Doug Edgar, Bill Leighty, Nancy Waterman, Chris Frank, Brady and Cindy Scott, Linda Deakins and Sondra Stanway who directed, sorted, lifted and placed the magazines into the van.
We appreciate the in-kind business support provided by Alaska Marine Lines, Mendenhall Auto and the Alaska Department of Transportation. We acknowledge all the businesses and households that made it a priority to sort materials and deliver them to be recycled. Thanks to everyone for keeping this valuable material out of the land-fill.
Additionally, Friends of Recycling thanks ACS Directory for funding and shipping an early-bird van filled with recycled telephone books.
On Saturday, Aug. 27, in addition to collecting magazines, Friends of Recycling will sponsor a one-time only Juneau roundup of telephone books. Save your old phone books. Collect your old magazines. Bring them from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., Aug. 27, to the DOT parking lot at 7 mile Glacier Highway.
