Hundreds of people work to raise the Naakee Kooteeyaa totem pole Friday at Halibut Point Recreation Area in Sitka. The totem, carved by Sitkan Tommy Joseph, honors the late Michio Hoshino, a Japanese wildlife photographer who often took photos in the Sitka area. At least 20 visitors from Japan, including Hoshino's widow, attended the ceremony.
